SEO acronym meaning--for anyone who's unsure

The acronym SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” If you’re still confused, I’ll explain

Obviously, the acronym and its original phrase are jargon used by people working in the marketing field. So, if you don’t work in this field, here’s a primer on how search engine optimization works.

How SEO Works: The Basics

A “search engine” is another word for the technology behind services like Google search, Bing and Yandex. This technology is like a giant robotic librarian that scans, categorizes and ranks every single page on the entire internet.

When you type a “search query,” which are your search terms, into a search bar, the search engine provides you a list of pages that it thinks will satisfy your searching needs.

The list of webpages you receive after completing an internet search is called your “search engine results page” or your SERP.

So, SEO is the art of getting web pages to appear on the top of the list for popular “search queries.” If you typed “SEO acronym” and reached this page in search, that means I did a good job, because it was my aim to target searchers who type that phrase into the search bar.

What are SEO services?

SEO services are a set of practices that are mostly used for marketing purposes. The goal of SEO is to make sure that people searching for your business or topics your business could help with can find your site.

However, it is not as easy as it sounds. There are over 200 SEO “ranking factors” that determine the success of this strategy. Some are technical issues in the coding of your web pages, others relate to internet links, and still others relate to writing. I mostly focus on SEO writing in my services.

Here are some examples of “ranking factors” that people specializing in SEO services analyze to help your site improve:

  • Site structure and organization

  • Page links connecting other sites to yours, and connecting pages on your site to other pages

  • Writing text and programing certain page elements in ways that improves your page’s chance of appearing in the search results for keywords

  • Selecting keywords (this is not as straightforward as it sounds)

  • Analyzing your competition’s page ranking details

Through analysis, planning and implementation, SEO services help your website attract viewers just by using Google Search or other search engines. And they help you analyze your marketing success and competition.

The results can be impressive. One of my recent posts was receiving an average of over 3500 clicks per day for a few days, because it was ranking well and it was targeting a trending topic in search.
